The Next Generation of Chess
Welcome to the Medway Chess Club Juniors! Our junior section is the heart of our community's future, dedicated to introducing children of all backgrounds to the wonders of chess. We provide a safe, encouraging, and intellectually stimulating environment where young players can learn the basics, develop their tactical awareness, and thrive.

Medway chess club is predominantly an adult club that offers social and competitive chess to members of the local community every Wednesday 7.45pm to 11pm. We are however also proud to support the next generation of chess players and extend a warm welcome to developing and able young players. We have over 20 junior members, most of whom are young teenagers. Many came to us having learned to play chess online, or at home with family. These children have thrived playing ‘over the board’ chess in a formal club setting.

In season 25/26 we have fielded two solely junior teams in the Kent chess league, one each in the Intro and Tom Fuller Cup competitions. Some junior members are also filtered into the club’s regular teams and play at a high level. Our junior members are supported with regular playing opportunities and benefit from game analysis with their opponents. They learn chess etiquette, and we have also supported junior players and teams at chess congresses.

We are currently unable to provide children’s chess lessons for absolute beginners. Medway Chess Club would also like to emphasise that it is not affiliated to the organisation naming itself ‘Medway Junior Chess Club’ which holds paid sessions through Learn Chess Academy. We include their link to support parents in exploring options available to them in seeking chess lessons for young children who have limited understanding of the game. Some of our current junior members graduated to us from this organisation when they needed better playing opportunities that Medway Chess Club can offer able and improving junior players.
Medway Chess Club have a comprehensive safeguarding policy and seek to ensure children have a positive and enjoyable experience of chess in a safe and caring environment and are protected from harm and abuse whilst participating in chess.
We are committed to ensuring that all young players have a positive, enjoyable and safe experience of chess within a caring and respectful environment.
